One School One Book

Welcome to John Stewart Elementary's One School One Book!

About the Program

One School, One Book is a family literacy program that enables you to create a school-wide book club. Everyone - students, families, teachers, staff - read the same book at the same time. At home and at school, Early Childhood through 5. We will saturate our school - and our community - with literacy. All students will receive a copy of their very own book..

The basic idea of the One School, One Book program is that every family at John Stewart will read the same book at the same time. According to the developers of this program, Read to Them, “the benefits of reading aloud are remarkable—studies have shown that reading to children helps them to listen better and longer, build bigger vocabularies, understand concepts better, feel positive about books, learning and more! When an entire school reads the same book, the buzz and excitement around the book being read increases these benefits and there is the added joy of building community in the school family.”

When will this happen?

Our One School, One Book adventure will begin on August 30th and go through September 27th. A calendar has been developed with the nightly reading schedule. On the calendar we have also included vocabulary words that you should talk to your children about. It’s a win win -- reading together as a family and increasing their vocabulary knowledge.

Every school day for the duration of the reading there will be daily trivia questions to encourage regular reading. There will be small daily prizes to go along with the trivia questions! Your child will take pride in knowing and anticipating the details of the story. You will want to make sure your family keeps up so your child can be included. Soon, everyone will be talking about this fantastic story!
